Desert Princess Costume – Go As A Belly Dancer Living In A Harem This Halloween

The Desert Princess Costume is another Harem or belly dancer style costume. It is undeniably sexy looking but not too revealing that you might feel uncomfortable or exposed when wearing it. The costume evokes the style of an outfit that a woman living in a Harem from the Ottoman empire might have worn.

Here is a bit more on the Desert Princess Costume and some background to a harem. This costume is similar in style to the Princess Jasmine outfit from the Aladdin story. It would be a perfect accompanying costume to an Aladdin costume if you were going to a party as a couple.

The costume comes with a sheer purple veil that can be worn over the face or down around the neck and shoulders. There is a purple bra tube top and short vest with gold trim. Similarly colored  balloon or pajama pants complete the costume. The pants also have a veil that can be used as part of an elaborate dance or a belly dance.

The various accessories that you see in the picture have to be purchased separately. This includes the cymbals and various bits of jewelry like the bellow button ring. You could probably use your own jewelry. If you get some cymbals then you may have to do a bit of practice before hand using them and even get a dance routine together. If you did go to this length for a party or maybe a Halloween occasion you would certainly get plenty of attention and compliments.

This is more of a belly dancer style costume than something that you might see in an Ottoman harem. Harems from Turkey and Arabia where simply places where women from the Royal family lived. In many cases, the Ottoman Sultan or ruler would have more than one wife and even have concubines that lived there but it wasn’t a place were he just went to get laid.

It was a home from the Royal family and children would also live there. The Sultan’s mother would live there too. In fact, many important functions were carried out by the wives of the Sultan in the Harem.

These included official duties of state and administrative tasks. So presumably they wouldn’t be wearing belly dancing gear when adding up the books or hosting an emissary from a neighboring state.

But who knows. Certainly western literature tends to portray Harems as pleasure palaces where a king or Sultan can indulge in his ultimate fantasies.
